Yesterday, the Indian Government sent a shipment containing 3,000 metric tons of wheat to Afghanistan. Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the Indian External Affairs Ministry, has said that India’s commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people remains steadfast.
So far, the government of India has been able to deliver 33,500 metric tons of wheat to Afghanistan in partnership with the World Food Programme. Afghanistan has a very dire need for support, with one third of the population hungry and two million children malnourished. Drought, pandemic, and conflict have worsened the food security situation, and hunger will increase so India’s aid comes at a critical time.
